Lefty liberal know-nothings should shut the fuck up about sex trafficking.
A Facebook connection (not “friend") of mine posted this classic sex trafficking fear mongering piece of bullshit misogynistic anti-sex-worker propaganda “news" report on their feed today with the remark:
It’s 2013 and the literal enslavement of women and children is still a big problem, even in the US, even near where I live.
I hate this shit. So I commented:
Actually, no, it’s not a “big problem." When it happens—which is EXCEEDINGLY RARE, and that’s why it made the news in the first place—it is horrific, but it is not actually a “big problem" that justifies the enormous public paranoia or financial expense that it’s being portrayed as. You could do a lot of good just by not repeating the propagandistic lie that it is a big problem or, better yet, educate yourself on the big-picture facts of the matter. You could start here.
That being said, what IS a big problem is the consistent fear-mongering over specifically sex trafficking (such as the story you’re showing) as though it is THE kind of “human trafficking", when in fact LABOR trafficking (i.e., non-sexual forced labor, i.e., slavery) is over 90% of trafficking crimes. But you don’t see the Coalition of Imokalee Workers making the news nearly as often as a sex scandal.
WHY IS THAT?
To which the lefty liberal pathetic know-nothing who should the fuck up responded:
The stats I’ve seen indicate 80% of trafficking involves sexual exploitation, and 19% involves labor exploitation. Are you actually saying fear-mongering about sex trafficking is a bigger problem than sex trafficking? Is that for both the US and the world?
The link you gave that links to the International Labour Organization no longer has the source readable. I couldn’t find it on Google but maybe you can? Either way, from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, circa 2009,
"Sex trafficking accounted for 83% of the 1,229 alleged incidents of human trafficking reported by task forces. The remaining incidents involved allegations of either labor trafficking (12%) or other/unknown forms of human trafficking (5%)"
"Characteristics of Suspected Human Trafficking Incidents, 2007-08" (PDF). January 2009. http://content.news14.com/human_trafficking.pdf
I know about the Coalition of Imokalee Workers and about tomato plantation slavery in the US. Plantation slavery, debt bondage, organ removal, sweatshop slavery, sex slavery are all significant issues within the patriarchal, racist, capitalist economy.
Here’s one potent example of the human trafficking portion that sex slavery contributes: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/03/super-bowl-sex-trafficking_n_2607871.html
If you find weaveinc.org reputable, 10,000 women are sex slaves in Los Angeles’ underground brothels.
The United Nations Global Report on Trafficking in Persons (2012) indicates on page 16, Figure 4, that for the Americas, 51% of human trafficking is for sex.
https://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/glotip/Trafficking_in_Persons_2012_web.pdf
It also states, page 11: “Women account for 55-60 per cent of all trafficking victims detected globally; women and girls together account for about 75 per cent". If you add boy children to that, the figures increase even further to show the minority are adult men. Since “traffickers tend to be adult males", this indicates a strong sex and gender issue at work.
The overall rates they state are, “Trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation accounts for 58 per cent of all trafficking cases detected globally, while trafficking for forced labour accounts for 36 per cent." which is true even though “The share of detected cases of trafficking for forced labour has doubled over the past four years."
So, I will repeat, it’s 2013 and the literal enslavement of women and children is still a big problem, even in the US, even near where I live, and it’s primarily a problem of male adults targeting them for sex, though of course that is not the exclusive, or in every single case the primary, form of officially-deemed forced labor or human trafficking.
And while that sounds good if you’re drunk on white-knight misogynistic bullshit, it’s patently ridiculous to everyone who’s done any kind of critical thinking about this issue. So, here’s why he’s a pathetic lefty liberal know-nothing who should shut the fuck up:
Jeesus fucking christ, John Large, that is some piss-poor reading comprehension of your own sources, right there. The first source you cite is for SUSPECTED human trafficking incidents. That is not the same thing as ACTUAL trafficking incidents. IT EVEN SAYS SO IN THE STATISTICS YOU CITE. See attached image. You are literally conflating “alleged incidents" with “confirmed incidents." And you’re doing it so sloppily it is to the point of utter dangerousness for public policy that puts the lives of sex workers at risk. Stop it.
As for your “potent example," the Super Bowl sex trafficking myth has been debunked EVERY SINGLE YEAR it gets reposted. Observe:

I don’t know what WeaveInc.org is about, but 10,000 people is a completely absurd figure on its face.
As for the UN doc, one of the advisors on sex trafficking issues to the UN is Donna M. Hughes, who you might remember as the woman in Rhode Island *WHO CALLED ME, PERSONALLY, A SEX TRAFFICKER FOR DOING KINKFORALL UNCONFERENCES,* see also my blog post on the matter: http://maybemaimed.com/2010/03/24/the-salvation-army-incites-personal-attacks-against-me-a-blog-reply/ And I’m not sorry, because if doing KinkForAll.org conferences falls under Ms. Hughes’ definition of sex trafficking, then it is so broad a definition as to be completely meaningless.
So I’m sure you can understand my blatant disregard of anything that lying piece of vile trash publishes.
So, I will repeat, John. You are wrong, you are repeating dangerous propaganda, and you should educate yourself or shut the fuck up.
Of course, because it’s Facebook, his lefty liberal know-nothing friends who should also shut the fuck up started making derailing tone arguments while not having a single rebuttal to any of the facts they got blatantly wrong.
Fucking liberals. STFU.
