“Prostitutes, porn models, and erotic dancers have less recourse to police, courts, medical treatment, legal redress, or sympathy when they are subjected to criminal, violent, or unscrupulous behavior. It is more difficult for them to unionize or mobilize for protection as workers. We need to support women wherever they work. We need to realize that more stigma and more legal regulation of the sex industry will merely increase the vulnerability of the women in it. Feminists who want to support sex workers should strive to decriminalize and legitimize sex work. Sex workers relieved of the threat of scandal or incarceration are in a better position to gain more control over their work and working conditions.”
